This Friday at 8 pm, catch CoupleProv at Steel City Improv Theater: real-life couples doing it (improv) on our stage to celebrate Valentine’s Day! 💝 Get to know one of the performer couples in the interview below!
SCIT: How long have you been together?
Justin: Since May of 2008.
Kasey: Technically, May 3, 2008
SCIT: How did you meet?
Justin: Classic Rom-Com. Boy meets girl at a NYC improv theater. Girl ignores Boy. Weeks later, Boy ignores Girl. Finally, months later, the best friend of Girl admits that Girl likes Boy and invites both to a party to celebrate Mexican Independence. A tale as old as time.
Kasey: NO, NO. Girl’s friend makes her come to her house team show. Girl meets Boy. Boy IGNORES GIRL, Girl tells friend of Girl that this guy is kind of a jerk, no thank you. Girl and Boy go to a party to celebrate Mexican Independence. Boy does a lot of magic tricks with rubber bands and that thing where he pretends to puke up a deck of cards. Boy has Girl’s heart forever.
SCIT: How long have you been doing improv?
Justin: I have been doing improv since high school and college in the mid 90s. Kasey was a trained musical theater actor who never did improv until a few months into dating me. We have not stopped improvising since.
Kasey: Again, Justin, do you know anything about me? I did short form for a few years before I did longform.
SCIT: Do you often perform together?
Justin: Very often. The last class we took before moving to PGH was a duo improv class. And then we started the theater. Our first team was the teacher team, which was just the two of us as we were the only teachers.
Kasey: The Union started as just the two of us (get it, The Union?). Now, we go as JustinKase.
SCIT: What is one of your go-to moves on stage?
Justin: Justin sweeps as a gruff character and Kasey dons her innocent character.
Kasey: Justin cleans a bar and speaks in a nondescript Eastern European accent. Kasey either smokes or is a tween girl.
Finally, we had Justin and Kasey pick three questions from the Proust Questionnaire to answer.
Proust: What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Justin: A hammock on a warm spring day.
Kasey: A hammock on the beach, listening to the waves. Room service approaching.
Proust: Which living person do you most admire?
Justin: Nicolas Kim Coppola, a.k.a. Nicolas Cage.
Kasey: Same. He’s our greatest national treasure.
Proust: What is your motto?
Justin: “Listen. Commit. Play.”
Kasey: “Nicholas Cage is our greatest national treasure.”
